23andMe test kit registration

by Bella

It’s super simple and you’re in control of your information. Before sending in the DNA sample to 23andMe, the test kit should be registered, though if, you forget, it can be done after the kit arrives at the lab.

When Jack registered his test kit, it was a straight forward process where he was able to choose what information he wants to share with genetic matches. This was a relief for him as his initial goal is to simply know his ancestral make-up and not to find relatives.  With 23andMe you can change your choices whenever you like, so if he decides that, at some point, that he would like to get contact with genetic matches, he can just log in and change his account and change the permissions.

We took screen shots of the registration process to share. If you’re thinking of having testing with 23andMe, you’ll know what it entails.

There are 5 steps to the registration process.

1. Sign Up

2. Verify

3. Security

4. Barcode

5. Consents

Once the registration process is complete, place the sealed and bagged sample in the original box and seal the box. It is already labeled with return postage. Drop it off at USPS and wait. It takes between 4 to 6 weeks to receive the results. You will be notified via email when they are ready. Sign into your account to view them.

Stay tuned. When Jack’s results arrive, I’ll be too excited not to share.

    • When Jack and I received our kits in late 2014 and early 2015 the Barcode was on a sticker on the test vial or tube. During the registration process, we entered our Barcode numbers in the space provided in step 4 (see screen shot above in my post). 23andMe may have made some changes in the last year and a half, so you may want to contact them if you still can’t find your kit’s barcode. I hope this answers your question. Good luck. Please let me know how you get on.

    • Patricia,

I’m so sorry for not replying to your comment sooner. I imagine you must have worked out how to register your kit in the last two months. Unfortunately, the registration process changed earlier this year and I’m unfamiliar with the new one. You can’t really go through the process without having a new kit to register. There is a link on the 23andMe sight to request registration help. Got to https://customercare.23andme.com/hc/en-us/articles/204632060. I hope you’ve figured it out and got your results by now.

    • I’m sorry to hear that the process isn’t going smoothly for you. I found a registration trouble shooting page on their website. Visit this page to see if you can easily solve the problem yourself. If that doesn’t work contact them for help. I’ve found them to be very helpful. It’s well worth the effort. Best of luck.

    • Provided you are accessing the official 23andMe.com, it’s a mystery to me why you keep getting a warning. I can only suggest you use the contact page in 23andme to ask them if they can help.

You’re at least the third person who has contacted me this year regarding registration problems. Though you’re the first to mention the Norton security warning.

The registration process and much of the 23andme site has undergone changes since I started my journey with them. I wish I could help you.

Thank you for your post. It might help others in future if you could come back and let us know how you get on.

      Best of luck.

  2. Received my kit from Amazon.. and spending the last 4 days trying to register on the 23andMe website. Keeps coming back with “invalid barcode”. Can’t use it if I can’t register it.
Called their customer service, and they said nothing they can do.
    So what a waste of $99 !!!
